United Amateur Artistes, the oldest among Tamil Theatre groups active today, was founded in 1952 by the doyen of Tamil theatre late Sri. Y. G. Parthasarathy along with his writer-director-actor friend Sri. Pattu and has been continuously staging plays ever since. Many famous personalities have come through the portals of this great institution over the years and the list boasts of formidable personalities of stage and screen including the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Hon. Ms. Dr. J. Jayalalitha, apart from her mother Sandhya, Aunt Vidya, Nagesh, V. Gopalakrishnan, Srikanth, Lakshmi, her mother Rukmani, Cho, Ragini, Sukumari, Vaishnavi, Radha Ravi, Yuvasree, etc., and has to its credit more than 6000 performances so far. It is the most widely travelled group internationally to stage its plays, having travelled to Malaysia/Singapore as early as 1978. Since then it has gone to USA and Canada in 1989, Australia & Singapore in 1990, Srilanka in 1992, USA, Denmark & Paris in 1993, Srilanka, Bangkok, USA, London & Paris in 1994 and once again USA in 1996 with their highly successful play – SVUAA ( Seithigal Vasippathu UAA). In 1998 UAA toured Switzerland & USA. UAA made a tour of Europe and USA in September 2000 also. Malaysia and Hongkong in January 2001 and Europe again in 2002. UAA toured USA once more in 2003 and performed in USA, Denmark, Norway and Malaysia in 2005. Toured Dubai and USA in June 2006.. Toured Dubai, Kuwait, Muscat in 2010 and again USA during 2011. Recently the troupe performed once again in Muscat in June 2012. It has produced 66 full length plays in its illustrious career so far, some of which have also been made into successful movies. Today Y.Gee Mahendra, with a record of 63 years of stage acting and more than 300 films and innumerable TV Serials to his credit, is leading this talented troupe, holding aloft the banner of UAA while his mother late Mrs. Y.G.P continued to hold active interest in the activities of the Institution till her last. Mrs. Sudha Mahendra and daughter YG. Maduvanthi also take active interest in UAA’s activities. We propose to continue to take abroad several of our very popular plays-all comedies with purposeful themes. Y Gee Mahendra also undertook an innovative project in USA in May 2012 – training NRI artistes in Chicago to perform the highly successful play VENKATA 3 all over USA, with only Y.Gee.M from India playing the lead. UAA is celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in the year 2012 and still going strong. UAA has also performed in Nairobi (Kenya) 2014 & Tokyo (Japan) 2015 and the Gulf 2015. Recently UAA made its 16th tour of USA in Oct – Nov 2019… again USA Singapore and Dubai in 2023.
