Charukesi

The single word title of the play, Charukesi, didn’t reveal much before you ventured into the world of the celebrated maestro, Charukesi, whose story gently grasps the audience, gradually taking hold of their minds and emotions in a vice grip through to the end. Music is the visceral force around the fulcrum of which the central character with an eponymous name as Charukesi, takes you through a roller coaster ride, not allowing the minds of the audience to be distracted even for a second. One walked in expecting the usual light-hearted humour that YGM’s plays are celebrated for, but pleasantly surprised to be pulled into a more melancholic world of Charukesi, with a back story unfolding for every one of the characters, weaving into a meaningful whole and ending unexpectedly in a poignant climax which leaves one teary eyed. YGM shone resplendently portraying a musician , whose sacrifice is initially blurred for the audience by upstaging his unflexing traditional values, later seeping through the cracks of revelations from his interactions with an angry and vengeful entrant to his home. Music needs no words but Charukesi embellishes music with unspoken but profoundly inferred words. Glad I made it to the play, covid notwithstanding.

இந்த மாதிரியான மனித உணர்வுகளை ஒரு இசைக்கலைஞருடன் இணைத்து இதயத்தை இதமாக வருடிக் கொடுக்கும் நாடகங்களை நடிக்கவும் நடத்தவும் ஒய்ஜி எம் மால்தான் முடியும் என்பது நூற்றுக்கு நூறு உண்மை அந்த காவல் நிலையக் காட்சி அருமை அதில் ரௌடியாக நடித்தவர் இயல்பான முத்திரை தங்கள் மனைவியாக நடித்தவர் பாத்திமாபாபுவை நினைவுபடுத்தினார் மற்றவர்கள் ஏற்கனவே தெரிந்தவர்கள் அனுபவ ராகங்களை அபூர்வராகங்களாக்கினார்கள் என் எழுத்தாள நண்பர்கள் மறைந்த கிரேசி மோகனுக்கும் வாழும் வெங்கிட்டுவுக்கும் பாராட்டுக்கள் முக்கியமாக முதல்வரிசையில் இருந்து உங்கள் நடிப்பை அணு அணுவாகத் தலையாட்டி ரசித்த தங்கள் மனைவியார்க்கு திருஷ்டி சுற்றிப்போடுங்கள் நூறாண்டுகாலம் இருந்து கலைமாளிக் காவலனாக இருக்கப் பிரார்த்திக்கிறேன் காரைக்குடி நாராயணன்

Esteemed Shri Mahendra, ‘Superlative’ is the word that springs to my lips, to express my appreciation of your latest play Charukesi which I could attend the other day, much to my personl joy and satisfaction. You excelled yourself if I may say so, in bringing out the essence of the main character Charukesi, the ideal musician and a great human, with such effortless ease and elan. Your poignant silence during the entire final scenes made my eyes, well with tears. The short but effective display of your percussive excellence was simply superb. The storyline with a remakably original twist was just fantastic. Your dedication, perfection, eye for the minutest detail,the flawless presentation- the unique ‘ YGEEM ‘ stamp ,were all to the fore . Kudos to all the actors and actresses who verily lived their roles on stage. My great friend Veteran Suppuni Sir was his wonted masterclass. Shri Bala donning the role of ‘Ragadevan’ was exemplary with his poise and posture and the dress which fitted him to a tee. Being an excellent vainika , his background music score was atonce enthralling and unobtrusive. A big ‘Thank you’ for having taken the cudgels on behalf of the hapless classical music fraternity, answering convincingly the so called rebels against traditional values. As one, very close to the YGP family, your holding aloft the Flag of your uncompromising and amazing tradition, warmed the cockles of my heart.

CHARUKESI ஆன்றோர்களுக்கும், ஆன்றதமிழ் சான்றோர்களுக்கும் என் அருமை பேஸ்புக் நண்பர்களுக்கும் தமிழ் பாரதியின் கோடான கோடி வணக்கம்.

இன்று நான் உங்களுக்கு ஒரு நாடகத்தைப் பற்றிய விமர்சனத்தை பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள இதனை பதிவிடுகிறேன்.

இப்படி ஒரு அருமையான நாடகத்தை பார்க்க எனக்கு வாய்ப்பு அளித்தமைக்கு நடிகர் இயக்குனர் தயாரிப்பாளர் என பன்முக பண்பாளரும் தமிழ் நாடக உலகத்தில் தணக்கென ஒரு அடையாளத்தை உருவாக்கிக் கொண்டு நாடகத்தை செம்மையுடன் நடத்தி வரும் நாடக உலக சக்கரவர்த்தி என்று பலராலும் போற்றக்கூடிய திரு ஒய். ஜி. மகேந்திரா சார் அவர்களுக்கு நன்றி பாராட்டுகிறேன்.

நாங்கள் எப்போதெல்லாம் நேரில் சந்திக்க கூடிய வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கிறதோ, எப்போதெல்லாம் திருமதி. சுதா மகேந்திரா அம்மா அவர்கள் என்னிடமும் ஸ்வேதாவிடமும் சாருடைய நாடகம் சாருகேசி பாத்துட்டீங்களா? என்ற கேள்விக்கு இதுவரை இல்லை என்று தான் நாங்கள் பதில் சொல்வோம்.
“இட்ஸ் ஒன் ஆப் தி கிளாசிக் டிராமா… டோண்ட் மிஸ் இட்” என்று அவர்கள் எங்களிடம் சொல்ல எப்படியாவது பார்த்தே ஆகவேண்டும் என்கின்ற எதிர்பார்ப்பு மனதில் அதிகரித்துக் கொண்டே போனது.

நேற்றைய தினம் அப்படி ஒரு வாய்ப்பு இருப்பதை அறிந்து எப்படியாவது பார்த்தே ஆக வேண்டும் என்கின்ற ஆவலோடு நான் கிட்டத்தட்ட 15 கிலோமீட்டர் கடந்து இன்றைய டிராபிக் அனைத்தையும் மீறி சபாவை சென்றடைந்தேன். கூட்டம் அலைமோதியதால் கார் நிறுத்த கூட இடமில்லை. அடிச்சு புடிச்சு உள்ள வந்து சேர்ந்தேன்.

விஷயத்துக்கு வருவோம் “சாருகேசி” ஒரு பிரபல சங்கீத வித்வானின் அற்புதமான கதை.

கதையை எழுதியவர் திரு. வெங்கட் சார் அவர்கள். இப்படி ஒரு நாடகத்தை நமக்கு அவர் கொடுத்ததற்கு அவருக்கு முதலில் நன்றி பாராட்டுகிறேன்.
நாடகத்தை டிரமடைஸ் செய்து இயக்கி நடித்திருப்பவர் திரு ygee.மகேந்திரா சார் அவர்கள்.

நாடகம் முடிந்த பின்பு எனக்கு ஒரே கன்பூஷன் வெங்கட் சார் அவர்கள் எழுதிய கதையினால் நாடகம் நல்லா இருந்ததா?
அல்லது அதை இயக்கி நடித்த மகேந்திரா சாரால் இந்த நாடகம் அனைவராலும் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறதா என்ற கேள்வி மனதில் வரத்தான் செய்கிறது.

பின்பு தான் உணர்ந்தேன் திரு. ஒய் ஜி மகேந்திரா சார் அவர்கள் பேசிய போது இது ஒரு டீம் வொர்க். சிறிய கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கும் மிகப்பெரிய ஸ்பேஸ் கொடுத்து இருக்கிறார் கதையை உருவாக்கிய வெங்கட் சார் அவர்கள்.
புதுமுகங்களாக இருந்தாலும் சிறிய கதாபாத்திரங்களும் கூட ஒரு அழுத்தம் திருத்தமான முத்திரையை பதிக்கிறார்கள் என்றால் ஸ்கிரீன் ஸ்பேஸ் என்று சொல்லுவார்கள் அதை பிறருக்கு கொடுத்து அவர்களையும் பட்டை தீட்டு இருக்கிறார் இயக்குனராக இருந்த ஒய்.ஜி. மகேந்திரா சார் அவர்கள்.

சங்கீதத்தை மையமாகக் கொண்டு எடுக்கப்பட்ட திரைப்படங்களாக இருக்கட்டும்,
சீரியல்களாக இருக்கட்டும், அது மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றியடையும்.

ஒரு அற்புதமான மேடை நாடகம் கர்நாடக சங்கீதத்தையும், இன்று வளர்ந்து வரும் வெஸ்டர்ன் மியூசிக்கும் எவ்வாறு ஒருவருடைய ரசிக்கும் ரசனை தன்மைமை இன்றைய தினம் மாற்றி அமைத்து இருக்கிறது என்பதை அழகு பட எடுத்துச் சொல்லக்கூடிய ஒரு காவியம் தான் இந்த சாருக்கேசி…

சாருகேசி என்பது ஒரு ராகம் அந்த ராகத்தில் பிறந்த பல்வேறு சினிமா பாடல்களை ஒரு சாமானியனுக்கு எப்படி புரிய வைப்பது என்று எண்ணி இன்றைய சினிமா பாடல்களிலும் அதன் பயன்பாட்டை துல்லியமாக வெளிச்சம் போட்டு காட்டியிருகிறது இந்தச் சாருகேசி என்றால் அது மிகையாகாது.

அருமையான குடும்பப் பின்னணியில் உருவாக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கும், இந்த நாடகத்தில் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் இருக்கக்கூடிய கருத்து வேறுபாடுகளையும், அதை களைந்து எடுக்கும் பாணியும் கைத்தட்டளை அள்ளி செல்கிறது.

நடித்த ஒவ்வொருத்தரும் அற்புதமாக நடித்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதற்கு ஒரு மிக பெரிய சாட்சி நான் எதுவாக பார்க்கிறேன் என்றால் கடைசியாக 20 நிமிடங்கள் மகேந்திரா சார் மேடையில் இருந்தும், அனைவரும் ஸ்கோர் செய்கிறார்கள்.

அவர்கள் வசனத்தை கவனிப்பதா? இல்லை இவருடைய நடிப்பை கவனிப்பதா என்று பார்க்கும் பொழுது வசனம் எப்படியும் காதில் விழுந்து விடும். ஆனால் அவருடைய நடிப்பை நாம் விட்டுவிடக் கூடாது என்று என் கண் முழுவதும் அவர் மேலே தான் இருந்தது.

கிடைக்கும் இடத்தில் எல்லாம் சிக்ஸர் அடித்து ஸ்கோர் செய்து கொண்டு போய்க் கொண்டே இருக்கிறார்… இதைத்தான் அனுபவம் என்பார்களோ?

சில வசனங்கள் தெறிக்க விடுகிறது. வில்லுப்பாட்டுகளும், குறி சொல்லும் போது கேட்கும் வாய்ப்பு உங்களுக்கு முன்னமே இருந்திருந்தால், இன்றைய தேதியில் உங்களுக்கு ஒரு சீன் விருந்தே படைக்கிறது.

அதில் வீட்டுக்கு வந்த மருமகள் கௌதமி என்னும் கதாபாத்திரம் அனைவரையும் சாப்பிட்டு விடுகிறார். அந்த சீன் நின்றால்தான் பின்னால் சொல்லக்கூடிய கதை நமக்கு வழியை ஏற்படுத்தும்.

நான் இப்படி சொல்லிக் கொண்டே போனால் கதையை உலறிவிடுவேனோ என்ற அச்சம் கூட என் மனதில் வந்து போகிறது.

இன்னொரு மாஸ்டர் பீஸ் திரு. சுப்பிணி அண்ணா அவர்கள்…
அவர் மேடைக்கு வந்த உடனே கைதட்டல் பறக்கிறது என்பதை அவரே சொல்லும் போது சிரிக்கத் தெரியாதவர்களும் சிரித்து விடுகிறார்கள். நாடகத்தில் வரும் இவரின் பெயரும் கூடுதல் நகைச்சுவையை மேடையில் உருவாக்குகிறது. அனைத்து நாடகத்திலும் அவருக்கு என்று ஒரு உடல் மொழி இருக்கும்… இதிழும் இல்லாமல் இல்லை.
அவர் நடையும், குழுக்களும்…
சிரிப்பொலியையும், கைத்தட்டளையும் அள்ளிச் செல்கிறது.

இன்னொருவரைப் பற்றி சொல்லியே ஆக வேண்டும் சாமானியனை சங்கீத ரசனையுள்ளவனாக மாற்றக்கூடிய போலீஸ் ஸ்டேஷன் காட்சியில் லோக்கல் தாதாவாக வந்து அனைவரது மனதையும் கொள்ளையடித்து செல்கிறார்… அந்த நடிகர் அண்ணாவின் பெயர் எனக்குத் தெரியவில்லை.

பாகவதற்கு புதியதாக அவர் பாகுபலி என்று பெயர் சூட்டி இருக்கிறார். இந்தக் காட்சியில் ஸ்பிக் பர்சனாலிட்டி வேடத்தில் ஒய் ஜி மகேந்திரா சார் கலக்கி எடுத்து விட்டார். அந்தக் காட்சி முடித்த விதம் அற்புதம். சிறந்த காட்சிகளில் ஒன்றாக நான் அதை பார்க்கிறேன்.

இப்படி சாருகேசி நாடகத்தை பற்றி என்னை பேசச் சொன்னால், இன்னும் எழுதிக் கொண்டே போவேன்.
ஆனால் இதைப் பார்க்கக் கூடிய வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்ககூடிய உங்களுக்கு நான் அதிகப்படியான விமர்சனங்களை கொடுத்து உங்களுடைய கூஸ்பம்ஸ் உணர்வை கெடுத்திட விரும்பவில்லை.

வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும் போது கட்டாயமாக நீங்கள் பார்க்க வேண்டிய நாடகமாக நான் கருதுவது இந்தச் சாருகேசியும் ஒன்று.

… நான் சிரித்தேன், ரசித்தேன், அழுதேன்… அந்த அனுபவம் முழுமையாக உங்களுக்கு கிடைக்க எல்லாம் வல்ல இறைவனை வேண்டிக்கொள்கிறேன்.

குடும்பத்தோடு பார்க்க வேண்டிய நாடகம் திரு. ஒய் ஜி மகேந்திரா சார் இயக்கத்திலும் நடிப்பிலும் ஆன சாருகேசி…

எங்களுக்கு சுதா அம்மா சொன்னார்கள் என்று சொன்னேன் நினைவு இருக்கிறதா… எஸ்! அதேதான்…

“இட்ஸ் ஒன் ஆப் தி கிளாசிக் டிராமா… டோண்ட் மிஸ் இட்” என்று.
உங்களிடம் நானும் ஒன்று சொல்லதான் வேண்டும்…
“இட்ஸ் 100% ட்ரூ”

Charukesi , the name of one of my favourite ragams and an invite to a stupendous play named as this ,saw us in raptures today at MFA .It was YGM sir all the way , only an.artist with unbridled passion for theatre can clock in 70 n.odd years doing jus that – creating wonderful plays ! Whether as a famous carnatic singer with a majestic demeanour or a totally distraught confused and afflicted alzheimers patient he simply stuns with superlative acting !! It’s more than a challenge bringing in the confusion, helplessness , vagueness and utterly lost look of a person affected by this dreaded disease and he jus sits there easily drawing tears from the audience ! The Raagadevan aspect is a mystic addition reflecting the intricate mind pattern and so is the scene when he briefly gets back his singing ability before succumbing to the disease ! The political.satire and humorous light hearted bits in the first half leading to a heavy second makes an all round interesting and well penned script ! Rajesh Vaidya for adding the musical value to each scene is obviously a wonderful choice relevant to the theme of the play ! The actors be it the thief at the police station belting out raagam names or the daughter in law seemingly evil at the beginning but endearing herself to her in laws later , Suppini sir whos been an unstinted pillar of support to UAA s plays spanning decades , blend wonderfully well into this confluence of emotions like the raagas in a concert !! The senior actor Sivakumar sir as a special guest rightly remarked that this play should be made into a movie ! We couldn’t agree more with this thespian Thiraiulaga Markandeyan for Charukesi to.glitter on the silver screen !!
